Clearing Houses

What is a clearing house and why do I need one?

A clearinghouse is a third party “insurer” of coupons. Their function is to act as a bank and insurance agent to both the manufacturers and retailers. They assure the retailers that they will be compensated for savings given at the register and assure the manufacturers that the coupons there are reimbursing were truly redeemed.

Brands that do a high volume of coupons typically use a clearinghouse for time and cost savings. The clearinghouse simplifies the process by gathering all the manufacturer's financial responsibility into one payment instead of individual payments to all the retailers that redeemed their offers. The typical engagement for clearinghouses includes a set-up fee to build and ensure the coupon barcode as well as handling fees for each coupon redeemed. Some clearinghouses require an “escrow” account to ensure payment. When you are ready to execute a campaign, your clearinghouse will take the coupon campaign details you provide and return a barcode and legal language to add to the physical coupon. Although much of the market utilizes clearinghouses, some brands new to coupons or with small coupon volumes choose to handle settlement internally. 3,000-4,000 companies chose to do their own processing of coupons last year representing 8,000-10,000 coupons per month. Several of our brands use a company called Symbology to build the barcode.  Qples can provide sample legal language that just includes your company’s address and the location retailers need to return the coupons for reimbursement.
